Ibn Mas’ud - radiallahu ’anhu said:

Allah’s Messenger sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam drew a line for us and then said:

“This is Allah’s Path.” Then he drew lines to its right and its left, and said: “These are differing paths, upon each of them there is a shaytan (devil) calling to it.” Then he recited:

“And verily this is My Path, so follow it, and do not follow other paths for they will seperate you away from His Path.” (Surah al-An’am 6: 153)

Saheeh: Related by Ahmad (1/435) and also al-Hakim (2/318) who authenticated it and adh-Dhahabi agreed.
