Friday Reminders

Narrated by Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullaah (radhiAllaahu ‘anhu):

Whenever Allaah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) delivered a Khutba (religious talk), his eyes would become red, his voice rose and his anger would become intensified, as if he was like one warning an army and saying, “The enemy has made a morning attack on you. The enemy has made an evening attack on you.” He, sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, would also say, “Amma ba’du, the best of speech is embodied in the Book of Allaah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. And the most evil of affairs are their innovations and every innovation is misquidance.” [Reported by Muslim]

And in a narration of Muslim: “In the Prophet’s Khutba on Friday: He would praise Allaah and extol Him. Then, following that, he would say - and he had raised his voice…”

And in another narration from Muslim: “Whoever Allaah guides, no one can lead astray; and whoever Allaah leads astray, no one can guide him.”

An-Nasa’i has: “Every misguidance is (a cause to enter) the Fire.”

Question: When is the “Hour of Response” on Friday?

There are two opinions concerning the hour of response on Friday which are likely to be correct:

The first is that it lasts from after ‘Asr until the sun sets, for those who sit and wait for Maghrib, whether that is in the mosque or at home, making du’aa’ to their Lord, whether they are men or women; whoever does that is more deserving of seeing a response to his or her du’aa’. But men should not pray Maghrib or any other prayer at home unless they have a legitimate shar’i excuse, as is well known from the evidence of sharee’ah.

The second is that it lasts from the time when the imaam sits on the minbar to deliver the khutbah on Friday until he finishes the prayer. Du’aa’ at either of these times is deserving of being answered.

These two times are more likely to be the times of response on Friday, because of the saheeh ahaadeeth which indicate that. The hour of response may also be sought at other times of the day. And the bounty of Allaah is great.

Among the moments when response may come to a du’aa’ in all prayers, obligatory and naafil alike, is the moment of sujood (prostration), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The closest that a person may be to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so say a great deal of du’aa’ in sujood.” (Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), in al-Salaah, 482). And Muslim (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated in his Saheeh from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “As for rukoo’ (bowing), proclaim the greatness of your Lord in rukoo’ and strive in du’aa’, for you will be more deserving of being responded to.” (Muslim, al-Salaah, 479).

Mistakes regarding performing Tahiyyatul Masjid on Friday
Shaykh Mashhoor Hasan As-Salmaan

Al-Hāfith Ibn Hajar said: ‘Our reverend Shaikh Abul Fadl said in “Sharh Al-Tirmithī”: ‘All the Sahābah who prohibited that one does Salāt while the Imām is delivering his speech, their prohibition is addressed to those who are already present in the mosque [and want to do Nāfilah Salāt]. None of them prohibited doing Tahiyyatul Masjid. Besides, the order of doing it is clearly stated in an independent hadīth that should not be abandoned for just a probable interpretation of other narrations’.([8])

Imām Ash-Shāfi‘ī said: ‘Whoever enters the mosque while the Imām is delivering his speech or while the ’Athān is being called should perform the two Rak‘ahs and should make them short in accordance with the prophet’s (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) order’.([9])
He also said: ‘If there is no enough time to do these two Rak‘ahs because the Imām is at the end of his Khutbah and is about to engage in the Salāt, one does not have to do them. In my opinion, the Imām in such a case should try to prolong his Khutbah and order him to perform the two Rak‘ahs. If the Imām did not do this -which is detested-, he incurs no sin upon himself.’.([10])

Friday Reminders

Allaah’s Apostle (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) talked about Friday and said, “There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allaah will definitely meet his demand.” And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands.”

[Narrated Abu Huraira. Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 13, Number 57]

What is the ruling on raising the hands for the worshipers when saying Aameen during the supplication of the Imaam in the Friday Khutbah? And what is the ruling on raising the voice when saying Aameen?

Answer: It is not prescribed for the Imaam or the worshippers to raise their hands during the Friday Khutbah, because the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) did not do so, and neither did his righteous successors, may Allaah be pleased with them. But if the Imam is calling for rain in the Friday Khutbah, it is prescribed for him and the worshippers to raise their hands, because when the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) prayed for rain, he raised his hands and the people raised their hands. And Allaah, the Most Glorified says: Indeed, in the Messenger of Allaah (Muhammad (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)) you have a good example to follow. [1] As for saying Aameen to the Imams supplication during the Khutbah, I know of no objection to it, as long as the voice is not raised. And through Allaah is attainted success.

Friday Reminders

Narrated Abu Hurayrah:The Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa salam) said, “When it is a Friday, the Angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imaam comes out (for Jumuah prayer) they (i.e.Angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutbah.”
